Smile So I bought a new comp

GW is downloading all the patches... 4000 files

To make this thread not totally worthless...

I bought my new computer(HP Quad Core AMD 9500 3G RAM NVIDIA 8500 GT) without the package deal, meaning it didn't come with any of the extra stuff(virus protection, etc...). Would there be any free virus programs I could download? I heard AVG was good, can others vouch? Also, what other steps to secure my new comp should I take?

For a free anti-virus i'd recommend avast!. I've always preferred it over AVG.

I finally was able to log onto my account and play. I tried to play a character that was in RA. 21,000 files to download... aaarrrgh. How long should that take? Getting about 80 kilibites per second.

What you should have done was copy the gw.dat from your old PC onto a blank CD/DVD/Memory Stick and transfer it to your new one.

As you didn't, run Guildwars using the -image switch, which everyone knows how to do these days

AVG is all you need for a good free virus scanner, all the rest are fluff.

The best around these days is Kaspersky, which has to be bought. Avira Antivir is a free one that does the job too (differences between AVG, avast and antivir are not big).

Weekly updated for AV! A non-updated AV is worse than no AV, because it gives you the impression you're safe, while you aren't.

Avast updates itself twice a day.

All modern AV do, but updates can be cancelled for many reasons (you forgot to plug your modem, firewall, etc.), that's why it's so important to check that they're up-to-date.

Disregard all of those suggesting AVG, instead get Avast.

Lately AVG has been acting like adware, displaying ads and trying to force people into purchasing AVG 8.

I use Avira Antivir, it's scored the best on virus detection of the three big free ones (AVG, Avast, and Antivir). It's pop-up add everytime it updates is a little annoying. I've used AVG and Avast as well, AVG (unless they've started using ads too) was the easiest to use, and took the least amount of system resources. I didn't like Avast because of the interface, which is a shallow reason not to like an antivirus.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll just download a few of them and see which one suits me best. New comp is running smooth, except for it freezing once with GW. I think it may be because of the quad core, as my firends have had troubles also.

You could get Zonealarm if you are worried about and virues but I use AVG and I don't have any problems with it.I just wouldn't get Norton or Mcafee.

I would of got an Nvidia 8800GT card.
